What is Optomap Retinal Imaging?
Optomap retinal imaging is a state-of-the-art laser imaging technique that gives the optometrist a 200-degree field of view all the way to the back of the eye.
This tool has been proven to be safe and effective with no adverse side effects on over 65 million patient sessions.
Benefits of Optomap Retinal Imaging
The retina consists of a very thin layer of tissue lining the back of the eye. This is the only place on your body where blood vessels can be directly viewed from the outside.
Many diseases first show themselves with signs in the blood vessels. Optomap retinal imaging can detect early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and more.
Early Detection of Eye Disease
Optomap imaging enables your optometrist to see the very back of the eye. This is where the earliest signs of eye disease can be spotted by your optometrist.
An Optomap retinal screening can potentially detect signs of:
- Macular Degeneration
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- Retinal Detachment
- Melanoma
Retinal Imaging Vs. Dilated Eye Exam
In a traditional dilated eye exam, you are subjected to eye drops that dilate the pupils. These drops can take up to 30 minutes for full effect and you may experience blurred or sensitive vision for up to six hours afterward. You may not even be able to drive yourself home.
With Optomap retinal imaging, eye drops are rarely—if ever—needed. This results in better comfort for the patient and the ability to immediately return to normal activities.
Optomap retinal imaging gives a 200-degree visual angle on the eye, whereas a dilated eye exam only gives a 45-degree visual angle. Optomap offers a significantly wider viewing angle for your optometrist to study the health of your eye. This includes the periphery of your eye, where many eye problems begin and escape notice.
What’s the Optomap Retinal Screening Process?
The Optomap retinal screening process is completely non-invasive and painless. In fact, it’s so fast, easy and painless that it’s suitable and recommended for children.
All that happens during the exam is that you’ll look into the small opening in the Optomap device, one eye at a time. You’ll see a split-second flash of light. And that’s it! The entire exam takes just a couple of seconds. The flash of light isn’t blinding or jolting in any way, either.
In just a few minutes, the optometrist will have a 3-D, color printout map of your eye. You’ll also be able to view the printout as the optometrist discusses the findings with you.
An Optomap retinal screening can ensure that your eyes stay as healthy as possible. Early detection of health problems means that we can implement successful treatments as soon as possible.
